Top 5 Wednesdays: Favorite SFF Cover Art *Booktube SFF Awards Crossover Topic*

First of all let me explain a bit about this tag in case you don’t know about it. It’s a tag created by Samantha from Toughts on Tomes and Lainey from Ginger Reads Lainey and is a weekly book meme were a topic or theme is chosen and each week you have to choose five books/series/tvshows that fit the description. Coincidentally prepping for my Calendar Girls of this month I came upon some UK covers of the Vampire Academy series that I went crazy about, but for some reason just cannot find them online… 

Covers, what a superficial thing but what an important one!! It’s the first thing we notice about a book and yes, first impressions are key!! I think there’s a clear difference between SciFi and Fantasy covers, or at least should be. As SciFi usually tend to have a more clear message with some structured and strong cover art of font (like the examples given here and Ready Player One), Fantasy books tend to go for a bit more flowery fonts and more free-spirited and lyrical cover art.

So without further ado, here are my fantasy and SciFi choices (in no particular other):

1. The Vampire Academy series, UK Red editions. Red is not my color, it’s not what drives me to this covers, but look at them. The original US covers (all of Richelle Mead’s covers actually) are a complete and utter mess. I just don’t like people on covers… But the simplicity of these covers feel like candy to my eyes. Maybe I would have used the colours in the opposite way but still, simplicity is always better than over-charge!!

2. Wayfarers, UK editions. Like I just mentioned simplicity wins every time with me. In fact this exact design has become quite popular, because I’ve been seen it around on different contemporaries (which makes me crazy, because cover doppelgänger much?? I’ll stop, that’s better left for another ranting post). Simple and the color scheme that brings your minds automatically to outer space. The US cover on the other hand, went full on old school SciFi.

3. Reboot duology. That’s more like it. Simple black playing with the primary colours and just a little  that goes a long way. I’ve wanted to get this physical books ever since reading them last year.

4. Jackaby series. Yes these technically have headshots in them but the color scheme of the whole series is 😍😍😍. All of the colouring details, the opposing images and the overall vibes these books give grabbed my attention from minute one! I have read the first three, waiting for publication of the last one this year but I’ll have to wait another whole year to get the whole collection on paperback.

5. Blood of Eden, new designs. Just look at those covers, the new ones, not the oh-so-vampire-paranormal-people-in-the-covers original covers (aggrrr). I haven’t read these, not yet, but I wanted to. Just to repeat myself once again, here you go with a clear sample of simplicity well done! Also Julie Kagawa’s other series, Talon, is a great example: colorful, simple with a very strong title and font! Look down here ⇓⇓⇓.
