With refreshing candor, Sounds Like Me reveals Sara Bareilles, the artist—and the woman—on songwriting, soul searching, and what’s discovered along the way.
Sara Bareilles shares the joys and the struggles that come with creating great work, all while staying true to yourself. Imbued with humor and marked by Sara’s confessional writing style, this collection tells the inside story behind some of her most popular songs. Most recently known for her chart-topper “Brave,” Sara first broke through in 2007 with her multi-platinum single “Love Song.” She has released five albums that have sold 2.5 million copies and spawned several hits. More than a privileged view inside the experience of a remarkable musical talent—this is a moving tribute to the universal search for growth, healing, and self-acceptance.
Ever since hearing her tune “Love Song” I fell in love with her voice, her writing and overall her musical skills. So, it won’t come as a surprise if I tell you this book has been on my list since it came out more than a year and a half ago, but sadly I never found the mood for it (or who knows?¿?).
In this memoir we get an insight in what she had to go through to get to live as she pleased and also how she stayed true to herself, creating what she really wanted to share and not letting herself be manipulated into a product (I can only imagine in the music industry that’s no such a simple thing). This was a great read and a priceless insight into one of the most talented authors out there.
Like Sara more than once points out throughout the novel, this is a first and last occurrence (I wish this was not true! 😦 ) , so don’t expect more memoirs from her. In Sounds Like Me So Far we get to relive some of her most acclaimed tunes, where she explains how they came to her. She exploits, explores and shares everything that she is with all of us. It is a very brave (no pun intended) move for the quiet and intimate person that she is. The picture she draws about herself is one of a real person with dreams and hopes but also with reality always there, biting her tail. Of course, we don’t only follow Sara in her struggling getting to the stardom but also with flashes to her past. It is back there that much of her inspiration comes from. Taking her own experiences she gives meaningful messages that speak to different generations.
Even if I didn’t have as much in common with Sara as I did with Lily , taking this time to learn from her only made me appreciate even more her entire self and her art.
A must read for every Sara Bareilles fan!!! You’ll get an insight in this gorgeous woman’s psyche. You’ll see that everything that shines is not gold, but everything that she is, is really gold! 😉 🙂
